BLACK MOSS

ONE on ONE with Black Moss

1. Firstly congratulations on your numerous nominations for the 2009 SA Hype awards and all the best in that.

Thank you and congratulations to all the other nominees

2. Black Master of Spontaneous Sentences, how can you describe Black Moss in one sentence?

Black Moss is the Black Master of spontaneous sentences.

3. What is the difference between Blessing Majola and Black Moss?

Blessing and Black Moss are really the same person, both constantly changing as time forces them to. Black Moss is the vehicle for the expression of Blessing’s experiences

4. When did you first start spitting, what actually influenced you to get into hip-hop, and what keeps that fire burning?

I guess I don’t remember a time when I wasn’t Listenin to Rap Music. I remember writing a song in grade 4 with my crew Divash And Duzo, we use to call ourselves True thugs cause we were listening to bone thugs a lot then. I only started MCing seriously during varsity. And its basically the ciphers that keep my fire burning to this day.

5. There is a lot of “rappers” right now, what do you think separates you from the rest?

I think it’s the fact that I am not trying to offer a product for one particular market. Rappers are too quick to place themselves in a category ie Kasi, Swag, Conscious etc and this makes it hard for them to change with the change when it comes without losing their relevance.

6. You have managed to live up to your name as the Master of Spontaneous Sentences, not only that but your flow is one of a kind and your humour makes good listening , explain the Moss creative process.

Thank you. I don’t have a process. An idea comes and I just write it down. I get my inspiration from everything around me and so I just express it through writing about it.

7. On the Bench Mark Vol: 2 you mentioned that you “still representing 031 cos they don’t know us yet”, do you think Durban is finally getting the props it deserves or there is still a lot work that has to be done?

Putting 031 on the map that is. People Know About Durban or rather KZN Hip Hop now. KZN Artist Making Big Moves considering that most of us are at the very beginning of our careers. 031 is definitely on the map its just a matter of getting our music to more heads out there.

8. You also talk about taking 031/ SA HIPHOP over -seas how have you as a 031 representer managed to achieve this?

I have been to and performed in Paris, Monaco and Germany and have done a collaboration with German Artist Arano K2 which was Benchmark vol1. There definitely a need for the world to hear our stories.

9. What do you think are the ills of hip-hop today, in SA and globally?

I think we should stop talking about hip hop ills. I celebrate life Hip hop just reflects it. Hip hop is neither a religion nor a political party, there should not be a set way of how it should be but rather it’s a reflection of the consciousness of society

10. The track “Wack emcee” from the Bench Mark Vol:2, breaks it down in 4 minutes and 20 seconds of what a wack emcee is, what made you do that song?

Mary jane. I was somewhere in the clouds and standing in front of the mic when the beat came on. I was actually trying to freestyle and the first take was wack so I started freestyling that wack emcee chorus dissing myself. 10mins later we had a track.

11. You are constantly putting out joints on the internet, doing shows in all areas and, you have also featured in other projects like Maliq’s new project, Zakwe and Liquid K-ZN to name a few, where do you find the energy to be such a workaholic and still manage to be creative and maintain that appeal?

I think its because I really love what I do.

12. In your song mirror mirror u spit “stuff vernac its only used to make you sound hood/ I wanna hear my mother tounge used in songs to serve Good”…do you feel they are a lot of rappers abuse vernac to sound real?

“At the time I felt that too many people judge emcees by the way they sound and not necessarily about what they are saying. The flipside to the track is that both the vernac and English in the song are Moss to inforce that the language I rap in is irrelevant since its my expression so its whatever im feeling

13. Do you think there has been a good Black Moss reception country wide and globally, and do you ever worry of getting slept on?

Well I wount say Im worried about being slept on. We are all in this for different reasons and my reason is Just riding my wave and enjoyin myself. I just keep doing what feels good because I don’t know what tomorrow holds. I do Feel that Moss is growing and reaching a lot of people globally

14. In SA most crews run on shoe string budgets, especially if they are starting off, how have you managed to keep the Black Moss brand alive. Any advice you might have for the young ones coming up?

I have been saving my own money and paying for everything myself. I think the most important thing for any artist is to know what they want and how they want to go about achieving it. Money will come. And in SA as a Hip Hop Artist it helps to be able to present yourself in a way that a appeals to a variety of listeners not just what you grew up liking

15. What was your hip-hop’s most defining moment? I don’t have one

16. There is so much mad talent coming out of Durban right now, but who are you feeling right now, or who should we look out for?

Zakwe , Jet Wentworth., T.H.O.T.S. Manelisi, Liquid KZN

17. Have you gone through situations where you considered hanging the MIC.? Nope!!

18. Let’s move ahead, what should people look out for in 2010, any works that you have out right now, or in the pipeline?

Currently out is Mind Trip EP. Available on 0739367248 and watch out for the album coming in mid/late 2010

19. Lifting your right hand what five things do you hold dear to your heart?

Nothing but Everything

20. The Master of Spontaneous Sentences it has been an honour talking to you, wishing you much success and God bless, any last words you wonna leave us with?

Thank you for asking me questions it was way better than when the cops did it…
